The Wawona Swinging Bridge Trail is an easy, 2-mile out-and-back hike along a wide, flat path. This trail features the Wawona Swinging Bridge, several idyllic swimming holes, and numerous wildflowers, including Alpine lilies, California poppies, crimson columbines, and shooting stars. The highlight of the trail is swimming in the chilly pools that are found across and above the bridge.
Unlike the popular and much-photographed Yosemite Swinging Bridge, the lesser-known Wawona Swinging Bridge actually does swing. This bouncy suspension bridge spans over the South Fork Merced River at the south end of Yosemite National Park.
There is one porta-potty at the trailhead but no other restrooms, and there are no water fountains at the trailhead or along the trail, so bring bottled water or a filter. Dogs are not allowed on the trail, and it is not wheelchair-accessible. Parking is available at the end of N. Chilnualna Falls Road in a tiny dirt parking lot. Although there are no tables or benches on the trail, this destination is popular for picnics, simply spending the day relaxing in the tranquil wilderness, or enjoying the cool waters on hot summer days. Its relative isolation - especially in comparison to the day hikes in Yosemite Valley - make it an ideal alternative for those seeking more solitude.
