The Old Mine Trail is a 2.8-mile, out-and-back trail that’s located within the larger Mount Rainier National Park near Ashford. A moderately trafficked trail, the Old Mine Trail is mainly used for hiking, walking, bird viewing and nature walks. Being a seasonal trail, the Old Mine Trail is best used from May to October. Western red cedars, Douglas firs, fluffy moss and sword ferns dominate a bigger section of the Old Mine trail. From the highest sections of the Old Mine trail, hikers will be rewarded with picturesque views of the narrow and slow-moving Carbon River and old and glacial Mount Rainier. It is important to point out that dogs are not allowed on the Old Mine trail. Anyone visiting the Old Mine trail should remember to carry plenty of drinking water since many water sources along this trail are contaminated. A National Park Pass is needed to access the Old Mine trail.
