The McAlester Lake/South Pass is an 8.7-mile, out-and-back trail that is located within the North Cascades National Park. Accessible throughout the year, the McAlester Lake/South Pass is mostly used for hiking, nature trips and camping. At the highest sections of the McAlester Lake/South Pass hikers will get to enjoy breathtaking scenic views including the expansive subalpine fir, subalpine larch, as well as mountain hemlock ecosystems. Because black bears are quite common on this trail, hikers should avoid leaving their food unattended while camping or hiking. Dogs can access this trail; however, they should always be on a leash. Hikers should remember to carry plenty of drinking water. To camp overnight, hikers should obtain a backcountry camping permit at the trailhead.
