The Thornton Lakes and Trappers Peak Trail is a 10.2-mile, out-and-back trail located within the Ross Lake National Recreational Area. Being a seasonal trail, it is best used from May to October. Mainly used for hiking, backpacking walking and nature trips, the Thornton Lakes Trail is the perfect destination for families with children. At the highest sections of the trail, hikers will get to enjoy beautiful vistas including the magnificent Thornton Lake, Triumph Peak, Skagit Valley, and the Teebone Ridge. A variety of indigenous wild plants such as Huckleberries, Hemlock, Cedar dominate a bigger section of the trail, while common wildlife seen near the trail include eagles, hawks, marmots, and black bears. While hikers may obtain drinking water from rivers and streams, it's important to treat the water before consumption. Dogs are not allowed on this trail. Those who intend to camp on this trail should first obtain a background permit at the ranger's station.
