Located deep within the Clearwater Wilderness near Carbonado, the Summit Lake Trail is a 5.7-mile, out-and-back trail that is rated moderate. A heavily trafficked trail, the Summit Lake Trail is mostly used for camping, walking, fishing, hiking, and nature views. Since it is a seasonal trail, It is best used from May to October. Hemlock and fir trees are among some of the few plant species found along the trail. Animals that can be spotted when hiking the Summit Lake Trail include bears, deer, marmots, and elks. From the highest sections of the trail, hikers will get breathtaking views of the Summit Lake, Twin Lake and Mount Rainier. While dogs are allowed on the trail, they should always be on a leash. A Northwest Forest Pass is needed to access the Summit Lake Trail.
