The River Route Nature Trail is a fairly short single-track trail with an elevation that's just right for a leisure hike with kids or dogs on leash. It's also a terrific trail for running and cycling.
Running through the trail is the pristine Apple River with the wooden bridge above providing an observation deck for bird watching. From here, you can also admire the lush forest, as the soothing breeze provides a cool respite from summer heat.
Being a less visited area, the River Nature Route trail is a tranquil spot for fishing on a weekend morning. Take caution in winter as the riverside tends to be wet, a condition made worse by occasional fallen trees and logs blocking the path. Nonetheless, since the trail is just a mile, the winter weather it shouldn't kill the fun for adventurous hikers. After a day of exploring, hikers can also camp in the woods close to the trail.
