The mountain Top trail is a moderately trafficked loop that covers 1 mile located in the Davidson Arabia Mountain Park near Lithonia, Georgia. With an elevation gain of 700 feet, the Mountain Top trail provides a beautiful scenery of wild flowers and bird watching through a forest. Dogs are allowed on the path on leash and visitors are encouraged to leave no trace and clean up after their pets. The trail is family friendly and allows visitors to hike around the lake found at the top of the mountain using the easy boardwalk that should take an hour as they enjoy views of water softened granite hugging the edges of the creek and vistas from the mountaintop. You are encouraged to bring lots of water and sunscreen since the terrain is hilly and can be strenuous especially to bikers.

History

The Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve is part of the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area, which also includes Arabia Mountain. Located in Dekalb, 20 minutes’ drive from the city, it has over 2,550 acres of barren landscape and the Arabia Mountain which is 954 feet above sea level and 170 feet above the Arabia Lake reservoir. A century ago, this area was a granite quarrying site that provided granite through the Davidson Granite Enterprises which began its operations in 1895. This corporation was owned by the Chip Davidson family who also owned the mountain for a better part of the 20th Century. The Davidson family won this area during the Georgia Land Lotteries after the Creek and Cherokee tribes who had inhabited the area in the previous century ceded the land to the state of Georgia in 1821. In the 1970s, more than 500 acres of the mountain was donated to the DeKalb County by the family. The top of the mountain is home to species of moss and lichen which take at least a hundred years to grow an inch while the craters capture the rain water reflecting views of the open skies above.
