Because of its ascent up a rocky ridge, Horseshoe Mountain Trail at Lake Catherine State Park is ranked as moderately challenging and best suited for intermediate hikers. Hiking the elevation is worth it for the scenic overlooks it provides.
In addition to hiking up for beautiful views, the Horseshoe Mountain Trail also provides a shoreline view of the Ouachita River, which was dammed to create the lake. This loop trail is roughly three miles. Some parking is available at the trailhead, which is also near the campgrounds.
There are no drinking fountains near the trail, so be sure to take plenty of water. Dogs are allowed on the trail, but must be leashed at all times. Parents/guardians should judge their children's ability before considering this trail due to its length and incline along the rocky ridge.
