The Sandstone Trail is a short out-and-back trail that includes a somewhat steep ascent in its second half. Popular with locals, this trail is perfect for a pre-dinner walk. Parking is easily available on Stone Canyon Drive, and hikers are welcome to let their dogs off-leash as long as local ordinances are followed - there's a convenient information board located right at the beginning of the trailhead, as well as complementary doggy bags. Note that this area is multi-use, and the late afternoons in particular are a popular time for horseback riders to take to the trails. This is a great location to take a short hike through a forest filled with California oaks, bay trees, and a charming brook.

This location serves as a trailhead for a few different routes, so make sure to get your bearings before starting on your walk. Hikers will begin on a flat graveled area right off the residential street, and will continue straight past the first two splits in the trail. To the right is a small oak forest nestled between two neighborhoods, and the left is a pretty example of the famous California golden hills. In the mornings and evenings, it's common to see herds of deer grazing. Hikers will soon arrive at a concrete basin after a short decline, and will continue bearing to the right, up a somewhat steep hill that enters the forest itself briefly. The trail will eventually end at the neighborhood across the small canyon, and hikers are welcome to either turn around and return via the same trail, or walk on surface streets back to their car to get a beautiful view of the East Bay (and San Francisco on a particularly pretty day).
