Point Bonita Lighthouse Trail is a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and features a 164-year-old lighthouse, a mountain tunnel, and a suspension bridge--not to mention wildflowers and the most spectacular ocean view you'll find. The Point Bonita Lighthouse was the third built on the West Coast and was erected to help ships passing through the Golden Gate straits. The trail to reach the lighthouse is just a half-mile but is steep in some areas. It is, however, well-maintained, family-friendly, and suitable for all skill levels.
This heavily-trafficked 1-mile trail (out and back) has the best views from September until May. *Note that you have to plan your trip to the lighthouse based on the limited visitor hours: Sundays and Mondays from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. At all other times, the cave leading to the lighthouse itself is closed.
The Point Bonita Lighthouse Trail is both historical and breathtaking, making it a perfect hiking destination for families with children! Dogs are not allowed on this trail.
