The Bonita Creek Trail is a very short and easy, 1.5-mile out and back trail, with an elevation of 5,150' and a gain of 50'. It goes along Bonita Creek, a seasonal creek, at the west end of the Chiricahua National Monument. The Bonita Creek Trail is open to visitors and hikers all year long, from 8:30am to 4:30pm; there is no parking fee and the trail is kid friendly. It’s best to leave the dogs at home just in case you decide to hike one of the connecting trails where dogs are not allowed.

Hiking this short Bonita Creek Trail, which heads north from the Bonita Picnic parking area, will give you an opportunity to traverse the creek’s grassy meadows and woodlands. Although you won’t see any of the unique rock formations like the Big Balanced Rock or the hoodoos, you will be able to see a bit of interesting history in the Canyon, including a preserved 19th century log cabin, the Faraway Ranch (a 2 story homestead), and a few preserved chimneys from a 1930s Conservation Corps Camp. If you want to hike a bit further, the Bonita Creek Trail connects with the Silver Spur Meadow Trail at Faraway Ranch.

Bonita Creek Trail is famous for its wildlife, including the whitetail deer family that resides in the area all year long, so expect a visit especially during early morning or late afternoon. And don’t forget about the scampering yarrow spiny lizard and black tailed rattlesnake that are leading the box turtle over to the playful coatimundi family romping in the exquisite wildflowers from the latest rain! It’s a fun, short, and interesting hike.
