Long Creek Trail's first section was built in the fall of 2008. Long Creek Trail came into existence with support and efforts from the city of South Portland, the Main Conservation Corps, and the West End Trail Committee (a sub-committee of the South Portland Trust). Long Creek Trail's main objective is to make the west side of the city friendlier to the pedestrians and cyclists.
One of the historical sites along the Long Creek Trail is the smoking tree, an essential traditional Abanaki site where negations took place in the 17th century of first treaties between the Early English settlers and local Native Americans. Long Creek Trail is unique in a way that it offers its hikers an opportunity to have a glance at its incredible view down to the creek and its hilly marshlands.
